Oklahoma City Thunder Make NBA History with 65th Win, Eye Deep Playoff Run

The Oklahoma City Thunder are in the midst of a historic season, transforming from a 40-win team into a championship contender in just two years. Following Tuesday night’s 136-120 home win over the Los Angeles Lakers (48-31), the Thunder improved to an impressive 65-14 on the season — setting a new NBA record in the process.

With the victory, OKC secured its 51st double-digit win of the season, surpassing the legendary 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers for the most in league history. That iconic Lakers team, led by Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Gail Goodrich, went on to win the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. The Thunder are hoping to mirror that outcome with their own dominant postseason campaign.

A Turning Point in a Tight Matchup

Despite the final score, Tuesday’s game was closer than it seemed. The Lakers held a 108-107 lead with just over seven minutes remaining before a dramatic shift in momentum. Luka Dončić, who had been instrumental for L.A., was ejected after receiving his second technical foul. Official J.T. Orr cited inappropriate language, allegedly aimed at a fan, as the reason for the superstar guard’s removal.

After Dončić’s ejection, the Thunder went on a commanding 29-12 run to close the game, preventing the Lakers from sweeping them in back-to-back home matchups. While the controversial call sparked plenty of debate, Oklahoma City’s dominant finish underscored their depth and resilience — even against a team led by LeBron James and Austin Reaves.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Strengthens MVP Case

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued to make his case for MVP, delivering a spectacular performance with 42 points on 14-of-26 shooting, six rebounds, six assists, and a block. He was supported by Jalen Williams, who added 26 points, and Isaiah Hartenstein, who controlled the paint with 15 rebounds and two blocks.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s ability to take over games offensively makes him a dangerous weapon, but the Thunder's success also hinges on balanced contributions from the entire roster — especially as they head into the high-pressure environment of the NBA Playoffs.

Thunder Poised for a Historic Playoff Run

With their playoff spot locked in and momentum on their side, the Oklahoma City Thunder are eyeing a deep postseason run — potentially clashing with the Lakers again in the Western Conference Finals. Head coach Mark Daigneault will need his squad to maintain both composure and intensity, especially in tighter matchups where every possession counts.

While blowout wins like Tuesday’s make headlines, the ability to grind out tough victories will be just as crucial in the road ahead. Whether it’s a clean sweep or a gritty win, the Thunder are showing the NBA they’re ready to compete for a title — and perhaps even etch their name in basketball immortality.
